Speaker Of The House Margaret Anderson Kelliher To Address Members at Fall Welcome Reception & Expo

The Fall Welcome Reception and Expo is combined with the first monthly meeting of the year to give members two great events at one low cost. The event takes place Monday, Sept. 28 at 11a .m. at the Marriott Minneapolis West and features a committee and affiliate member expo, giveaways and much more.

ACEC/MN is pleased to have Speaker of the House, and candidate for Governor, Margaret Anderson Kelliher (DFL) speak to members. As Speaker of the House, she has worked to make Minnesota a leader in energy, including guiding passage of the strongest renewable energy standard in the country. She also brought together a coalition of business, labor, agriculture and environmental leaders in support of a comprehensive transportation bill. The legislation became law following the veto override of Governor Tim Pawlenty.

FORECASTING SEMINAR: Department of Economic & Employment Department

With a questionable economy and concerns about how Minnesota is doing compared to the rest of the country, we’ve invited Paul Moe, Deputy Commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) and Kyle Uphoff, DEED Regional Analysis and Outreach Manager, to give us a pulse check on the state and how the AEC industry is fairing in these uncertain times.

Attend the Oct. 22 seminar and find out:

Overview on the Department of Employment & Economic Development
* Economic outlook for state/region
* How do you see the economy affecting the engineering, architecture, construction (AEC) industries
* How does it affect state agencies/workers
* What new/growing markets do you see making an impact
* How has technology affected business and how do you see it continuing to make an impact

To register for these events, contact Melissa at Melissa@acecmn.org or register online with a credit card at www.acecmn.org.

Awards Competition Deadline Coming Up

Do you know which projects your firm is going to enter in the ACEC/MN Engineering Excellence Awards Competition? The competition is a great opportunity to showcase your work to existing and potential clients, and promote your firm’s capabilities to the community. The preliminary entry deadline is October 5 (about a month away). If you’re new to the competition and you’d like to find out how to submit an entry, consider attending the informational meeting this Wednesday, Sept. 16.

ACEC/MN is pleased to continue offering a special incentive for first time entrants. Member firms that have not entered the competition in the past 10 years are eligible to receive 50 percent off the entry fee. Instead of paying $650, your firm would pay only $325!

Awards packets and entry forms will be mailed to key awards contacts and principals last month. The information is also posted on our website at www.acecmn.org. If you do not receive a packet and would like one mailed to you, contact Lynae Peterson lpeterson@acecmn.org. The deadlines are as follows:

Engineering Exploring Post Host Kick-off Sept. 14

ACEC/MN is once again launching an engineering exploring program to introduce students (9-12 grade) to the field of engineering.

Every other Monday evening (September through November), engineering firms will host the program at their office. This year, students will form project teams to “design a school.” Each firm will work with the students to illustrate how their firm contributes to the overall project. (Example - site selection, surveying, soil testing, foundations; civil (roads, bridges, parking); architectural and structural design; HVAC and lighting design, etc)

We invite you and your parents to attend our kick-off event on Monday, September 14 at 6:30 p.m. at Bonestroo in St. Paul. This is a great opportunity to learn more about the program, meet the engineering representatives and other explorers and find out the meeting schedule.

If you are interested in attending, please RSVP to Lynae Peterson with the number of people attending at lpeterson@acecmn.org or 952-593-5533.

Increasing Engineering Awareness Through Scholarships

Financing a college education is becoming more difficult as higher education costs continue to rise dramatically. Outside of course work challenges, students are faced with finding creative ways to help pay for their education. To assist engineering students with their financial burdens, ACEC/MN is offering scholarships to college students entering their junior, senior, fifth year, and or master’s in the fall of 2010 who are studying engineering or land surveying at an accredited Minnesota school.

If you know any engineering students or interns who might be interested in applying for one of these scholarships, please direct them to the scholarship section on the ACEC/MN website www.acecmn.org for an application. Applications are due November 2, 2009. Scholarship recipients will be recognized at the Annual Engineering Excellence Awards Program on January 22, 2009, at the Minnesota Valley Country Club in Bloomington, MN.

These scholarships are made possible by donations from ACEC/MN member firms and funds raised from the annual softball, basketball and golf tournaments. Last year, the Scholarship committee awarded 9 scholarships totaling $22,500.  As always, contributions to the scholarship fund are voluntary. If your firm would like to help support the program, please send your firm’s contribution, or notice of intent to contribute, to Melissa@acecmn.org at the ACEC/MN office by November 13, 2009.

Softball Tournament Raises Over $3000

Twenty-five teams spent Saturday, August 8, participating in the 29th annual ACEC/MN Scholarship Fund Softball Tournament in Bloomington. The tournament is held yearly to generate funds for the ACEC/MN scholarship program.

The scholarship program, which was established in the 1970’s, is designed to provide financial aid to engineering students interested in consulting engineering, educate them about the industry; develop and maintain relationships with Minnesota colleges and universities; and promote continued interest in consulting engineering to past scholarship recipients through follow-up contacts.

Thank you to all of the teams that participated and congratulations to the following winners:
